The GRCA Board of Directors has been working hard over the last few months in preparation for the 2020 Conference in Des Moines, Iowa USA and to build and strengthen our alliance of 108 communities across the world. We welcomed our newest board members, Brooke Harris, Flavia Biggs, Natalia Vajda Viacava, Seyi Amosu, and Sol Bembibre, to join our returning board members, Jen Stevens, Sam Bellach, Sofie Søndervik Sæther, Celina Nicole Williams, Lana Welchman, Prosper Hedges, Savhanna Joy, Sabrina Sierra, Saman Kamgar-Parsi, and Casey Vendel in the work of creative and collaborative movement building.
We are so proud of the work we’ve been doing and are looking forward to building and sustaining our movement with our membership. We have some exciting updates from our 2019 Mid-Term Board Retreat which was held outside of the United States for the first time in our organization’s history in Mexico City. Joined by Mel Hsu, our amazing Conference Logistics Coordinator, we ventured to Mexico City to come together and explore what our movement’s growth can look like. The coordinators from Girls Rock! Des Moines, Jen Carruthers and Sara Routh joined us via a video call to work together in creating an amazing conference in Des Moines this April. We are eternally grateful for the collaboration, guidance, and hard work of Mel, Jen, and Sara in moving the conference. Members of our Caucus Advisory Council also called in to our meeting to update us on their work to collaborate on some ideas for moving forward as an organization.
The MTBR was, as it always is, a meaningful and productive retreat that allowed our organization to reflect on where we came from, where we are, and where we hope to go. Together, we imagined new ways to do our organizing work and critically examined the relationships our organization has with global movements of anti-oppression and feminism. Thinking globally, we identified the need to increase our international work, and to shift the ways that we collaborate to make meaningful changes to our organizational structure. We are so excited to share that work with you.
Our New Structure:
In the past, the work of our Board has shifted and adapted along with new collective leadership, and this MTBR we have shifted once again. Moving away from a committee-based structure that divided the work along lines that felt out of harmony with the direction our organization is currently journeying, we have opted to create a project-based structure to tackle the many jobs that we are tasked with both within and outside of the conference work itself.
We have opened the Executive Committee meetings to the full board, to dissolve the perception of hierarchies within the GRCA, and to strengthen our commitment to transparency and horizontal leadership. In place of committees, we have organized our work into five “themes” that board members are the Coordinators for, and within each theme are various projects that our Board - and membership - can participate in.
This new structure hopes to create project teams that align with individual skills and interests, rather than with committee categories that we feel no longer make sense to us in this iteration of work. It also hopes to invite greater collaboration, input, and contributions from you, our membership, in ways that will allow anyone committed to the work of our movement to review the projects that we are working on and offer support or contributions that similarly align with their own interests and skills.
Moving forward, we will be keeping an up-to-date section online and in our newsletters that list the projects that invite membership participation. We know and have seen that we are a movement of leaders, and we are deeply committed to sharing leadership with our membership.

MTBR Notes:
The work of creating this new structure was encompassing, exciting, and exhausting! We worked extremely hard at the MTBR to embrace this change with courage, and are really proud of the new project theme structure that we will be doing our work in. La junta directiva de GRCA estuvo trabajando mucho en los últimos meses para organizar la conferencia en Des Moines, Iowa y para construir y afianzar nuestra alianza en las 102 comunidades alrededor del mundo. El MTBR fue, como siempre, un retiro productivo y significativo que le permitió a nuestra organización reflexionar de dónde venimos, a dónde vamos y a dónde quisiéramos llegar. Pensando globalmente, identificamos la necesidad de acrecentar nuestro trabajo internacional y transformar las formas en las colaboramos para hacer cambios en nuestra estructura organizacional. Estamos muy contentes de compartir este trabajo con ustedes.
Nuestra estructura:
En el pasado, el trabajo de nuestra junta directiva ha cambiado y se adaptado junto al nuevo liderazgo colectivo y en este MTBR hicimos cambios otra vez. Alejándonos de una estructura basada en comités que dividió el trabajo en líneas que se sentían fuera de armonía con la dirección en la que nuestra organización actualmente está yendo, hemos optado por crear una estructura basada en proyectos para abordar todas las tareas que tenemos asignados tanto dentro y fuera del trabajo de la conferencia en sí.
Hemos abierto las reuniones del Comité Ejecutivo a toda la junta, para disolver la percepción de las jerarquías dentro del GRCA y fortalecer nuestro compromiso con la transparencia y el liderazgo horizontal. En lugar de comités, hemos organizado nuestro trabajo en cinco "temas" para los cuales los miembros de la junta son coordinadores, y dentro de cada item hay varios proyectos en los que nuestra junta y los miembros pueden participar.
Esta nueva estructura espera crear equipos de proyecto que se alineen con las habilidades e intereses individuales, en lugar de con las categorías de comité que creemos que ya no tienen sentido para nosotres en esta iteración de trabajo. También espera invitar a una mayor colaboración, aportes y contribuciones de ustedes, de manera que permita que cualquier persona comprometida con el trabajo de nuestro movimiento revise los proyectos en los que estamos trabajando y ofrezca apoyo o contribuciones que se alineen de manera similar con sus propios intereses y habilidades.
En el futuro, mantendremos una sección actualizada en línea y en nuestros newsletter que enumeran los proyectos que invitan a la participación de miembros. Sabemos y hemos visto que somos un movimiento de líderes, y estamos profundamente comprometidos a compartir el liderazgo con nuestros miembros.
